The HDF SAM WING 12 ’Arrabona’ is the only SAM unit in the HDF. Similarly its predecessors, the WING is tasked with garrison-related duties as well, being the single largest military organization stationed at the garrison city of Győr.

The history of the unit started with the foundation of the 86th Air Defence Artillery Regiment (later renamed to 7th Air Defence Artillery Regiment, then SAM Regiment), which took place on 15 April 1950 in Miskolc. This unit is considered as the first predecessor of the WING having been always the largest army organic air defence unit with the richest traditions. The WING arranges the Day of the Unit day on 15 April each year to commemorate the predecessors.

The 12th SAM Brigade 'Arrabona' as direct predecessor unit of the WING was formed on 1 October 2001 by the ministerial decree No 34/2001. The Brigade was formed on the basis of the 12th SAM Regiment that was constituted on 1 September 1997 in Győr by grouping the 7th (Keszthely), 14th 'Rába' (Győr) and the 15th 'Kalocsa' (Kalocsa) SAM Regiments under the umbrella of defence reform in 1997 of which one of the main guiding principles was the concept of ’one branch – one garrison’ – concentrating the same ’type’ units into one garrison.

The organizational structure of the disbanded 12th SAM Brigade 'Arrabona' was formed in 2004 and 2005, by utilizing the equipment of the disbanded 5th Air Defence Artillery Regiment (Nagyoroszi), putting the upgraded/modernized technical assets in service (K–1P & K–2PC/ICC), and taking over and integrating the SAM Battery of the 25th 'György Klapka' Light Infantry Brigade.

The Minister of Defence disbanded the 12th SAM Brigade 'Arrabona' by decree No 22/2007 and founded the SAM WING 12 ’Arrabona’ on 1 March 2007 by issuing a decree No 26/2007 at the same time. Since then the WING has been existing more or less in the same organizational structure.
