kubEstablished by the Defence Minister in 2007, the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF) Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) WING 12 ’Arrabona’ is assigned to the HDF Joint Force Command. Its earliest predecessor unit was the 86th Air Defence Artillery Regiment, an organization formed in 1950. The HDF SAM WING 12 ’Arrabona’ comprises Command and Staff elements, a Headquarters Battalion, two SAM groups, a logistic battalion and a medical center. The WING the only SAM unit in today’s HDF.

In cooperation with the other units of the Hungarian Air Force, different military organizations as well as the allied forces in the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS), the primary mission of the WING is to provide air defence coverage for the designated military facilities, vital industrial installations and power stations of outstanding importance as well as for specified formations of the maneouvering land forces. The WING conducts comprehensive peacetime training activities to train for the tasks specified above.

Similary to the missions completed by our predecessor military units during the crisis in the former Republic of Yugoslavia, the WING participates in providing air defence coverage over the Hungarian airspace, like it did in autumn of 2001 as part of the measures taken in response to the terror attack on the United States, and also in October 2004 in the region of Balatonöszöd.

The former Brigade in 2002, 2003, 2005 as well as the WING in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 successfully completed their tactical live firing. In 2005 the Unit integrated all the weapon systems in its organisation (SA-6, MISTRAL and SA-16) into a Cluster/Task Force configuration and conducted a live firing in Poland – which live firing was arranged and evaluated in accordance with the NATO Tactical Evaluation (TACEVAL) program.

Our subunits distinguished themselves in flood relief operations (Tisza 2000, Danube 2002, Danube 2006, Tisza 2006, Cuha-Bakony brook 2010, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County 2010, Danube 2013), and they contributed to the country’s emergency management efforts derived from the red sludge disaster in 2010 and the extreme snowstrom in 2013.

Main technical assets

To fulfill its combat missions, the WING is equipped with command and control (C2) systems, SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) systems with different engagements capabilities as well as radar sensors with various functions.

The ICC/K–2PC integrated tactical command – battle management system ensures the automated flow of information between the different levels in the chain of command. The system supports operational planning, current operations as well as force protection and logistic functions. The K–1P automatized fire control system is developed by the Hungarian military industry. The system facilitates the WING/GROUP-level automatized airpace management and fire distribution and serves as an essential element of the centralized method of fire control/engagement operations.mistral

The surveillance and airspace management funcions of the K–1P are supported by different surveillance radars. The ST-68U (TIN SHIELD) radar is an S-band, 3D mobile radar station with digitalized signal processing. The P-18 (SPOON REST) radar is an L-band mobile radar station with digitalized signal processing.

The Soviet-made 2K12 KUB (SA-6 GAINFUL) short-range surface-to-air missile system was introduced into the Hungarian Armed Forces in 1976. The key system components are the acquisition and fire control radar (AFCR), the launcher and the missile with semi-active homing guidance system, solid-propellant start booster and ramjet engine. The key elements of the weapon system (AFCR and the four launchers) are mounted on self-propelled, armour-protected tracked chassis.

The MBDA-developed MISTRAL, that is a very short-range surface-to-air missile system, entered service of HDF in 1997. Its components are the MCP SHORAR (MISTRAL COORDINATION POST and SHORT RANGE ACQUISITION RADAR), the launching pads mounted on a wheeled vehicles with weapon terminals and the missile itself with infrared homing system.
